Does Your Garage Have Rafters, Ceiling Joists, or Roof Trusses?
Before you hang storage from your garage ceiling, you need to know what is above the drywall. Your garage may have rafters and ceiling joists, or it may have factory-built roof trusses. These are not the same thing.
Quick answer:
If you look up in your attic and see a large open space with boards slanting up like a tent roof, you probably have rafters.
If you see boards slanting up with lots of smaller boards connected to make triangle shapes, you have trusses.
The flat boards right above your ceiling holding the drywall are either ceiling joists or the bottom chords of the trusses.
Knowing what kind of framing you have is a good start. But it still doesn't tell you how much heavy storage weight your ceiling can safely hold before damage happens.
Three Parts Homeowners Often Mix Up
Rafters, ceiling joists, and roof trusses are different ways to build a roof. Most garages use one or the other, but people mix up the names all the time because they all hide behind the same ceiling drywall.

What Is a Rafter?
Rafters are the sloped boards that form the shape of a roof. They run from the roof peak down toward the outside walls.
A garage built with rafters often has a more open attic. You may be able to see the sloped rafters without a web of smaller boards crossing the space.
Rafters hold up the roof. They are not the same as the flat ceiling joists below them. A hanging ceiling rack installed into a flat garage ceiling may attach to ceiling joists—not to the sloped rafters.
What Is a Ceiling Joist?
A ceiling joist is a horizontal board. Horizontal means that it runs flat from one side of the garage toward the other.
Ceiling joists can support drywall. They may also help tie the walls together in a roof built with rafters.
Some ceiling joists were designed only for the ceiling below them. Others may have been designed for limited attic storage. Their size, spacing, span, lumber grade, and condition all matter.
Important: An open attic is not automatically a storage floor. Do not assume you can walk on it or load it with boxes just because the space looks open.
What Is a Roof Truss?
A roof truss is a complete frame built at a factory. Most wood trusses use smaller pieces of lumber connected by metal plates.
The sloped boards at the top are called top chords. The flat board at the bottom is called the bottom chord. The smaller boards between them are called webs.
These parts work together. The bottom chord may also support the garage ceiling, but that does not make it a floor or a storage beam.

How to Tell What Your Garage Has
If you can safely look above the garage ceiling, follow these steps.
- Look for triangles. A repeating group of triangles usually means you have roof trusses.
- Look for metal plates. Flat metal connector plates pressed into the wood are another strong sign of factory-built trusses.
- Look for open space. Sloped boards with a mostly open area below them may mean the roof was built with rafters.
- Look for separate flat boards. In a rafter-built roof, the flat boards above the ceiling may be ceiling joists or rafter ties.
- Look for labels or drawings. A truss may have a stamp or tag. Your builder, permit office, or truss company may also have the original plans.
Stay safe: Never step on ceiling drywall. Do not cut, drill, remove, or alter a truss member to make room for storage. If the framing is hidden or difficult to reach, ask a qualified professional to identify it.
Can You Tell the Weight Limit Just by Looking?
No. Identifying the framing does not give you a safe storage number.
Two garages can both have rafters and ceiling joists but use different lumber sizes, spacing, spans, and connections. Two garages can both have trusses but have different design loads.
Finding a piece of wood with a stud finder only tells you that wood is present. It does not tell you what that wood was designed to carry.

Why This Matters Before Installing Overhead Storage
A ceiling-mounted racks send weight through hangers, bolts, and selected framing members above the drywall.
The rack company can rate the rack. That rating does not identify your framing or prove what your garage ceiling can support.
Before drilling, you would need to know what framing you have, where the rack will attach, and whether those parts were designed for the proposed load.

Ceiling Capacity?
You have two choices. You can keep investigating the hidden structure, or you can choose a storage system that does not depend on the roof framing as its main support.
