Frequently Asked Questions

Floor-Supported Innovation

Your garage ceiling was designed to support the roof — not your belongings.

Ceiling-mounted racks and lifts place stored weight on your ceiling or roof structure. ARackAbove takes a completely different approach: the stored weight transfers through the support legs directly to your garage floor.

✓ No drilling ✓ No structural attachment ✓ No attic or ladder climbs
Safety Topic 1: Structural Safety & Engineering
1. How much weight is ARackAbove rated to hold?

ARackAbove is independently load-tested by Celtic Engineering of Windermere, FL, a structural engineering firm that also designs and engineers roller coasters for area theme parks.

  • 1-car garage unit: Rated for 1,300 lbs
  • 2-car garage unit: Rated for 2,000 lbs
  • Each leveling foot: Rated for 4,000 lbs
2. Has ARackAbove actually been load-tested?

Yes. Celtic Engineering of Windermere, FL independently load-tested ARackAbove.

It has also been proven through real-world use: 200+ units assembled over six years with zero reported failures.

3. What happens if I overload it?

Always stay within the rated capacity of your ARackAbove unit.

As the 1-car unit approaches its 1,300 lb rated capacity, a slight amount of flex may become visible in the middle. This is not a failure of the rack, but you should never exceed the 1,300 lb rating.

The 2-car unit uses the Flex Beam Center Support to keep the middle from sagging under normal use.

4. Why doesn't ARackAbove put stored weight on my roof trusses or ceiling joists?

ARackAbove is 100% floor-supported. The stored weight travels through the support legs and leveling feet directly to your garage floor.

The system lightly contacts the ceiling for side-to-side stability, but that contact point does not support the stored load. Every pound of stored weight is transferred to the floor rather than suspended from your roof trusses or ceiling joists.

5. How is that different from a ceiling-mounted storage rack?

A ceiling-mounted rack hangs its stored weight directly from the garage's ceiling or roof structure.

Florida Building Code IRC R802.10.4 addresses alterations and additional loads placed on roof trusses and requires verification that the truss is capable of supporting additional loading. ARackAbove avoids placing that stored load on the trusses entirely because 100% of the weight is supported by the garage floor.

6. What is the Flex Beam Center Support?

The Flex Beam Center Support is used on the 2-car ARackAbove to support the center of the storage platform and transfer that load directly to the garage floor.

It can be adjusted left or right to accommodate the larger of two vehicles parked underneath the rack.

7. Does ARackAbove damage my ceiling or walls?

No. ARackAbove requires no drilling into your ceiling, roof trusses, ceiling joists, or wall studs.

The system stands on the garage floor and gently tensions between the floor and ceiling strictly for stability.

8. What if I bump into one of the support legs?
  • In a typical 2-car garage: The outside legs sit tight against the walls and stick out only about 1½ inches.
  • In a 3-car garage: If a 2-car ARackAbove is assembled across two of the three garage bays, one set of outside legs may land between the second and third garage bays.
  • Center leg: The center leg sits between your two vehicles, typically near where the front wheels park. It adjusts left or right to accommodate different vehicle widths and is marked with reflective tape.
  • Light contact: A light bump will not move the rack enough to matter.
9. Is ARackAbove patented?

Yes. ARackAbove is protected by U.S. Patents #11,109,681 and #11,812,855.

Assembly Topic 2: Delivery & Assembly
1. Where is ARackAbove assembled?

ARackAbove is assembled directly on your garage floor.

The rack spans the width of the garage, typically between the garage door opener and the front wall. The H-assemblies are assembled on the floor and then stood upright. No ladder or ceiling work is required.

2. How is ARackAbove delivered?
  • Shipped orders: Delivered by freight directly to your driveway.
  • Local deliveries: Our team arrives with your unit on a cart, ready to assemble.
3. Can I assemble ARackAbove myself?

Yes. If you can use an electric drill with a 9/16" socket, a 9/16" wrench, and a level, you can assemble ARackAbove. Most homeowners complete assembly in under two hours.

4. How heavy are the individual pieces?

A complete 2-car ARackAbove weighs under 235 lbs total, but it arrives in manageable individual components.

The heaviest component weighs approximately 26 lbs, allowing one person to handle the individual pieces during assembly.

Sizing Topic 3: Fit & Storage Capacity
1. Will ARackAbove fit my garage?

The storage platform height is also adjustable to accommodate different ceiling heights, vehicles, and storage needs. See the Head Clearance Guide on our homepage for additional measurements.

2. Will it work with an 8-foot ceiling?

Yes. ARackAbove is designed to work with standard 8-foot garage ceilings while maintaining comfortable clearance for people and vehicles underneath.

3. How much can I store?

Actual storage capacity depends on the size and arrangement of the items being stored.
